Solar panel certification

There were already more than 560 solar parks in the Netherlands by 2022, accounting for an area of more than 3,600 hectares, according to the Land Registry. [1] And this number is still growing. More and more companies and investors are betting on renewable energy. For instance, solar parks are currently being built in the municipalities of Midden-Groningen and Hoofddorp. But with this growth also comes a new challenge: securing the parks.

To ensure the safety and reliability of solar parks, security is becoming increasingly important. The Insurers' Association has even drawn up guidelines for solar farm security and recommends following them. CBNN offers a special solar panel certification for solar parks. Why solar farm security is important

You may have seen it in the news, but copper thieves regularly strike at solar farms. They take valuable materials, walk over solar panels and disrupt power production.

The impact of such a theft is huge. Without copper cables, power generation comes to a standstill. This means not only hefty repair costs, but also loss of revenue. Sometimes the damage can even amount to tons.

Because of the high risks, good site security is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Security cameras are now standard and fencing of at least 180 centimetres is required.

Recommended security measures by insurance companies

Due to rising crime, the Crime Prevention Network has drafted a guide to preventive measures. The Insurance Association encourages solar park operators to follow these guidelines to minimise damage and financial risks. [2]

In the official handbook, they recommend the following measures, among others:

  • Camera surveillance with 24/7 monitoring
  • Automatic notification to a private emergency response centre (PAC)
  • Rapid follow-up within 4 hours of notification
  • Backup power supply
  • Fencing of at least 1.80 metres or a ditch as natural separation

These measures are intended for solar installations where no one is continuously present, which is almost always the case. Because solar parks are often remote, they lack social control, making good security extra important.
