Solar panel certification

There were already more than 560 solar parks in the Netherlands by 2022, accounting for an area of more than 3,600 hectares, according to the Land Registry. [1] And this number is still growing. More and more companies and investors are betting on renewable energy. For instance, solar parks are currently being built in the municipalities of Midden-Groningen and Hoofddorp. But with this growth also comes a new challenge: securing the parks.

To ensure the safety and reliability of solar parks, security is becoming increasingly important. The Insurers' Association has even drawn up guidelines for solar farm security and recommends following them. CBNN offers a special solar panel certification for solar parks. This certificate serves as proof that a solar park meets strict security requirements. A valuable document to deposit with insurers.

Why solar farm security is important

You may have seen it in the news, but copper thieves regularly strike at solar farms. They take valuable materials, walk over solar panels and disrupt power production.

The impact of such a theft is huge. Without copper cables, power generation comes to a standstill. This means not only hefty repair costs, but also loss of revenue. Sometimes the damage can even amount to tons.

Because of the high risks, good site security is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Security cameras are now standard and fencing of at least 180 centimetres is required.

Recommended security measures by insurance companies

Due to rising crime, the Crime Prevention Network has drafted a guide to preventive measures. The Insurance Association encourages solar park operators to follow these guidelines to minimise damage and financial risks. [2]

In the official handbook, they recommend the following measures, among others:

  • Camera surveillance with 24/7 monitoring
  • Automatic notification to a private emergency response centre (PAC)
  • Rapid follow-up within 4 hours of notification
  • Backup power supply
  • Fencing of at least 1.80 metres or a ditch as natural separation

These measures are intended for solar installations where no one is continuously present, which is almost always the case. Because solar parks are often remote, they lack social control, making good security extra important.

Why solar panel certification?

As the operator of a solar farm or roof, you want certainty. Certainty that your installation is properly secured, that you comply with the insurer's requirements and that there will be no surprises in the event of damage. CBNN can offer this certainty through solar panel certification.

This certificate confirms that your park meets current insurer guidelines. You receive proof that you, the manager, have taken measures to mitigate risks, something insurers increasingly demand before granting (full) cover.

You can hand over the certificate to the insurer, for instance when taking out a policy or adjusting coverage. This can lead to lower premiums or a lower deductible.

Certification process

CBNN specialises in the security of solar parks and offers tailor-made solutions. After all, every park looks different. Our certification process consists of the following steps.

Security scan

We carry out a comprehensive security scan of the premises. We map the site, conduct a risk inventory and investigate where the weak spots are.

Custom solutions

Based on the scan, we draw up a security plan. We advise on the ideal camera layout, detection systems and any additional measures, such as lighting.

Implementation

Our experienced technicians ensure fast and professional installation of the entire security system. Everything is carefully tested and linked to a control room.

Solar panel certification

Once all measures have been implemented and approved, you will receive an official solar park security certificate. This document confirms that the park complies with current regulations.

Maintenance

To continue ensuring the safety of the installation, maintenance is important. We check the operation of all systems, perform updates and ensure that everything remains compliant.

Why choose CBNN?

Good security goes beyond hanging cameras. CBNN offers a total solution, from construction to maintenance. Everything under one roof, so that, as a manager, you don't have to manage separate parties and waste unnecessary time with different contact persons.

  • One party for advice, installation and maintenance
  • Smart AI preventing false alerts
  • Floodlights for added effect and visibility
  • Also deployable during the construction phase
  • Always tailored to insurance conditions

This is what makes CBNN truly unique

What makes us unique is our approach. We use high-quality cameras combined with our proprietary AI server. This technology analyses camera images and recognises the difference between threats and innocent movements.

For example, if a body part is detected, the system recognises it as a potential risk. Thanks to smart analysis, the control room is only alerted when it is really necessary and false alarms greatly reduced.

And did you know that prevention is often already mandatory during solar farm construction? Many insurers have requirements for temporary security for CAR or assembly insurance. We actively think along with you in this too.

Need advice on solar farm security?

Implementing the recommended security measures not only contributes to a more secure installation, but also to business continuity. You significantly reduce the chances of break-in, sabotage and downtime, saving you a lot of money in the long run.

Frequently asked questions

A solar farm security certification is not mandatory in most cases, but it can be a valuable document to present to an insurer.

This is also mentioned in the official handbook of the Insurers' Association. Service and maintenance are essential to ensure that security measures remain effective. For this, a solar farm operator should take out a maintenance contract with a security company.

Without proper security, you could face an increased deductible when taking out insurance, delays in claim settlement or even rejection of a claim in case of damage. Moreover, you increase the risk of financial losses due to theft and breakdowns.
